Once a year, usually in January the car is taken in for an annual inspection and servicing at which time the mechanics inspect the IMS bearing and cut open the oil filter and check for metal shavings which would indicate a failure of the IMS bearing. To date there have been no such findings. All of this work is reflected in the detailed service records the auto shop provides at the conclusion of the service.
