This 1965 Pontiac GTO Hardtop Sport Coupe shows 54k original miles and underwent a full interior and exterior restoration in 2001. Power is now delivered by an upgraded 421ci "Tri-power" V8, which has been bored out to 428ci, and which is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include power steering, Rallye wheels, the factory radio, and more. Finished in Fontaine Blue over a Parchment vinyl interior, this Sport Coupe is now offered with the original build sheet, owner's manual, documentation from the Pontiac Historical Society, and a clear Michigan title.
The body was resprayed in its original Fontaine Blue as part of the professional restoration that was completed in 2001. Exterior features include signature GTO quad headlamps, an air-intake hood, hardtop roofline, chrome bumpers, and dual exhaust with polished tips. Per the selling dealer, all lights work and special attention was paid to optimal panel fitment and lines during the build.
Factory 14” steel Rallye wheels with trim rings are wrapped in Redline tires. Braking is handled by drums on all four corners, and the car is equipped with “Wonder Touch” power steering.
The interior is trimmed in Parchment (218) vinyl with matching door panels and contrasting black carpet and dash with wood veneer accents. Amenities include a push-button AM/FM factory radio and a 2-speed windshield wiper system.
Instrumentation is framed by a 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel and consists of a 120-mph speedometer, 8k tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The 5-digit mechanical odometer shows approximately 54k miles, which are reported to be original per the selling dealer.
The original 389ci V8 has been replaced with a 421ci V8 that has been bored out to 428ci and features three Rochester carburetors. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission and a Saf-T-Track rear differential.
Additional photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.
The sale includes documentation from the Pontiac Historical Society, records of the restoration including paint codes, an original owner’s manual, the Monroney showing an original retail price of $3,370, a custom car cover, an extra set of mats, and other supporting artifacts. The selling dealer also provides the following information from decoding the VIN: 2 - GM Division: Pontiac; 37 - Series: Tempest LeMans; 37 - Body Style: Hardtop Sport Coupe; 5 - Model Year: 1965; P - Production Plant: Pontiac Michigan; 183479 - Sequential Production Numbers. The Trim Tag is decoded as follows: 65-23737: 1965 Pontiac Tempest LeMans Hardtop Sport Coupe; TR 218-B: Parchment and Black Interior Trim; Paint D-D: Fontaine Blue; 01C: Third Week of January Production Date.
