Vehicle Story

This 1946 Chrysler Town & Country convertible was the recipient of a professional frame-off restoration that involved a full repaint, a new interior, and refinished exterior brightwork with wood trim. It features a refurbished factory radio, new Coker tires, and a new radiator. Powered by a 323ci straight-8 paired with a fluid drive semi-automatic transmission, this postwar first-generation Town & Country has received numerous awards including Best of Show at the W.P. Chrysler National Meet, and is now offered with a clear Idaho title in the seller’s name.

This Town & Country was resprayed in maroon as part of a comprehensive, frame-off restoration. According to the seller, the investment into the built is in excess of $200k spent. All exterior brightwork was re-chromed at the time, and the wood trim with ash framing and mahogany panels was refinished by a specialist in California. The tan canvas soft convertible top is in excellent condition as per the seller, and fit and finish throughout the exterior was a key component of the restoration effort.

Factory steel wheels with full covers are wrapped in new Coker wide whitewall tires.

The interior was professionally reupholstered as part of the restoration and is fitted with maroon leather with broadcloth inserts along with matching door panels, a two-tone maroon and black metal dash, and new maroon carpeting. The factory Mopar 802 Philco radio has a unique vertical layout flanked by an analog clock and has been restored and upgraded with an FM conversion. The trunk spring openers have been converted to gas-assisted struts.

Instrumentation is framed by a 3-spoke steering wheel and includes a 110-mph speedometer along with accompanying gauges for fuel, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The 5-digit mechanical odometer has a low reading and true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The 323ci straight-8 made 135 horsepower when new but has been rebuilt and received a new radiator from Brass Works. The electrical system was fully serviced and a new wiring loom from Y&Z was installed. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a fluid drive semi-automatic transmission and a column-mounted shift lever.

Additional photos showing the condition of the underside are available in the gallery.

The car will come with original manuals, a set of keys, and past awards won.

When was the restoration completed? Are the photos current? It looks like the tabs on the license are 2011. In some of the close ups, it looks like some rash on the front hood paint? Or is that just reflections?

@JimV – No mechanical issues. I have an enclosed trailer that I can deliver it to Seattle. The car is way to nice to drive that distance on our highways. The car is titled as a 1946 Town & Country. The VIN #7401900 indicates that is indeed a 1946 build year. The motor # C39 16088 also verifies The correct motor for that year ...

Thank you!
