Vehicle Story

This 1948 Mercury Eight is a partially restored second-generation coupe that features extensive brightwork, wide whitewall tires, a modern audio system, and a carpeted trunk. It runs a 239ci flathead V8 upgraded with an aluminum radiator and an eight-volt battery, and the drivetrain consists of a 3-speed manual transmission. Originally manufactured in Dearborn, Michigan, this Mercury Eight has been owned for a short time by the seller who indicates that it is running and driving well at this time. Finished in a light gray professional repaint over a dark gray cloth interior, it is now offered with a clear Arizona title in the seller’s name.

This Mercury Eight is painted light gray and has an accessory sun visor shading the split windshield. Brightwork exhibiting a deep reflective quality lines the exterior, starting with chrome front and rear bumpers with guards, fender-mounted dual stainless-steel moldings, Mercury Eight badges, mirrors, and more. The cabin is equipped with wing windows, and there are fender-mounted guards on the leading edges at the rear.

Factory 15” steel wheels with hubcaps and beauty rings are wrapped in wide-whitewall tires of unknown age. Braking is handled by a hydraulic system using four-wheel drums and the suspension consists of transverse leaf springs.

The dual-bench interior is fitted with reupholstered materials throughout, consisting of dark gray cloth textures with lap belts, and matching door panels and carpeting. The two-tone metal dash is accented in chrome for trim for the instruments, with a symmetrical layout and Mercury badging at the passenger side. There is an older radio installed in the instrument panel and an additional modern Kenwood AM/FM/CD head unit inside the glove compartment. Additional amenities include a deluxe heater and a carpeted trunk which houses a full-size spare with a matching Firestone tire and hubcap.

A 110-mph speedometer sits behind the two-spoke steering wheel with gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, voltage, and coolant temperature to its left. An analog clock mirrors the speedometer on the passenger side of the dash near a lockable glove compartment. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 23,000 miles, but true mileage is unknown.

The 239ci flathead V8 has been upgraded with an aluminum radiator and the battery is an eight-volt unit for optimal starting power. This engine was initially specifically designed for Mercury and was rated at 100 horsepower at 3,800 rpm with 180 pound-feet of torque peaking at 2,000 when new. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a 3-speed column-shift transmission.

The seller notes that the gauge cluster photo above was taken while the engine was running to show that the gauges are working.

@SpeedingBULLITT – Hello..As I am in Arizona too, it seems I could avoid shipping charges....are you in the Phoenix area? Have you taken pics of the undercarriage, or would it be possible to just come and see it? Thanks, Al ...

Thanks for your reply. I am West of Phoenix in Buckeye just off I-10. I will be home all day if you wish to see the vehicle. My wife and I are unable to get down to take pictures of the undercarriage. The driver that delivered the car said it looked pretty clean underneath.
