Vehicle Story

This 1956 Chevrolet 3100 4X4 is described as a custom-built pickup that underwent a multi-year, frame-off restoration starting in the late 2000s during which it was stripped to bare metal, given a new tailgate, doors, and forward bed panel, and repainted in the period green-blue finish it wears today. Other changes included the addition of air conditioning, a 4" suspension lift, and a drivetrain which includes a 700R4 4-speed and a 4WD hi/lo drive line from a late 1990s GM vehicle. Reported to be a long-term California resident, power comes from a rebuilt 350ci V8 that features MSD ignition components and an Edelbrock manifold, and this Chevrolet 3100 is offered with restoration documentation and a duplicate California title in the seller's name.

This 3100 was professionally resprayed in what the seller refers to as PPG Green Blue and features a stepside body configuration that was part of Chevrolet’s “Task Force” generation of pickups sold from model year 1955 through 1959. This example was acquired by the current owner in 1998 and later treated to a comprehensive body-off restoration. It is reported to be a lifelong California pickup with a total of three owners. During the restoration that took place during several years around 2008, the cab and bed were removed from the frame, the body was taken down to bare metal, and all exterior sheetmetal was refinished. When the truck was painted, it received a replacement tailgate, forward bed panel, and doors, while the bed side panels were stripped and refinished. Oak wood bed planks were also fitted. The cab is reported to retain its original panels. New chrome bumpers were added front and rear, all rubber trim and exterior brightwork was replaced or replated, and the side windows received a green tint. The resulting paint finish is high-gloss per the seller although it does show imperfections from use including minor stone chips that can be seen in detail photos.

Equipment includes 15” color-matched wheels with chrome accents which are wrapped in Open Country 31" by 10.5" with less than 5,000 miles on them per the seller. The braking system consists of power-assisted discs in the front and drums in the rear. Suspension components include front leaf springs from a 1990s-era Blazer and replacement rear leaf springs paired with air shocks which work to give the truck a 4" lift over its factory ride height.

The interior is fitted with replacement dark gray cloth bucket seats from a late-model Chevy Silverado, along with a replaced headliner and upper door panels. All metal finishes were color-matched to the exterior at the time of restoration. A JVC head unit has been mounted in the factory radio location and is wired to speaker boxes behind the seats, and an aftermarket air conditioning system is mounted under the dash. Other interior appointments include Chevrolet logo floor mats, replaced switchgear, and an adjustable steering column.

Instrumentation includes a gauge cluster from Classic Instruments providing a 140-mph speedometer and an 8,000-rpm tachometer, along with readouts for coolant temperature, voltage, oil pressure, and fuel level. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 4,195 miles, which reflects the mileage covered since restoration.

The engine is summarized as a rebuilt 350ci V8 which received a fresh oil pan, transmission gaskets, and new fluids within the last 500 miles per the seller. The engine compartment has many other upgrades including ATSCO power steering, an MSD coil, Edelbrock manifold, 4-bbl carburetor, Hedman headers mated to a Flowmaster exhaust system, aftermarket electric windshield wipers, and an updated wiring harness. Chrome pieces include Chevy-branded valve covers, the air cleaner, and alternator. Power is transferred to all four wheels through a 700R4 4-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic GM transmission backed by a late 1990s drive line and transfer case, and the rear axle ratio is geared to 3.71:1.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

This 1956 Chevrolet 3100 is accompanied by extensive documentation in the form of receipts, invoices, and other records, and is offered on a duplicate California title in the owner's name.

@Bogy409 – I noticed when brakes were applied at a speed above 25-30 it shimmied. ...

I believe what you are seeing is camera shake from the road reflectors. At 2:30 there was no shake while braking from 50mph. At 3:52 there is definitely camera shake from the reflectors when slowing from about 65mph.

@LarryS – Heard a couple of minor squeaks during the video during turns. Any idea what that is? ...

Thanks for the question Larry. Yes, the squeek is when the brake pedal is released. Only happens when pressure is applied from the right, which is the majority of the situations. I think it could be fixed with a slight bend or possibly a nylon shim where the brake arm meets the floor/firewall panel.
