Vehicle Story

This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 was first sold by Newt Godfree Chevrolet of San Antonio, Texas, where it would remain for the majority of its life according to the seller. Restored over the course of several years, factory options include cowl induction, front disc brakes, air conditioning, and more, while the 454ci big-block Chevrolet V8 was rebuilt using oval-port cylinder heads. Other equipment consists of power steering, a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission, a 12-bolt rear end, boxed trailing arms, and adjustable upper links among additional items detailed below. Finished in a respray of Mulsanne Blue with a black vinyl top and matching stripes over a black bench-seat interior, this 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 is accompanied by its original build sheet dated December 15th, 1970, a plaque commemorating its first sale, and two binders containing receipts and invoices which document its restoration.

Mulsanne Blue was a Chevrolet factory-offered color from 1970 through 1972 and is listed as the original finish of this 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454. The current finish is described as a respray commissioned by an owner who acquired the car as a project in 2016 and subsequently oversaw completion of the restoration. The blue body is contrasted by black stripes and a black vinyl top, both of which appear on the car's build sheet. The cowl induction hood is secured with pins, and SS badging is present on the front fenders, grille, and rear end.

US Mags wheels are fitted in a staggered configuration and come wrapped in Nitto NT555 245-section front and 295-section rear tires. Power front disc brakes are present along with power steering, and the rear end runs boxed trailing arms and adjustable upper links.

This Chevelle's factory interior configuration of bench seating has been retained, but re-trimmed with replacement upholstery, carpeting, door panels, and a headliner. The cabin is described as maintaining its stock appearance with the exception of two additional gauges which are fitted below the instrument panel. Windows are operated by crank and the TH400 3-speed automatic by way of a column-mounted shift lever. Original equipment included air conditioning, and the seller describes the system as having been retrofitted with a modern compressor and refrigerant. The seller says 500 miles have been covered since completion of the restoration.

The instrument cluster contains an optional 7,000-rpm tachometer which sits beside a 120-mph speedometer and a clock. Small dials inform the driver of the fuel level, coolant temperature, and voltage, while an aftermarket pair mounted below the instrument panel display oil pressure and voltage. A factory Delco radio is also fitted, but the seller describes a hidden sound system.

Power comes from a 454ci big-block Chevrolet V8 comprised of a 3999289 block and 353049 oval-port cylinder heads. The engine was professionally built with performance parts that include a hydraulic roller camshaft, roller rocker arms, an Edelbrock intake, and a Quick Fuel carburetor. Supporting components include an MSD ignition, electric fuel pump, and ceramic-coated Hedman headers. The belts have been upgraded to the modern serpentine style and dual electric fans aid in cooling.

Power is sent to the 12-bolt rear end through a Turbo-Hydramtic 400 3-speed transmission and the exhaust is described as a full 3" system with an H-pipe.

This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 is accompanied by its original build sheet, a copy of its first title, a plaque commemorating its first sale, and two binders containing receipts and invoices documenting its restoration.
