Vehicle Story

This 1964 Ford Thunderbird convertible comes from the first model year of the Thunderbird's fourth generation, which lasted until 1966. It comes dressed in a combination of white paint, power fabric top, and seats with chrome highlights and whitewall tires. A 390ci V8 routes its power through an automatic transmission and the rear wheels. Owned by the same person for the last 4 years, this Ford droptop located in Deland, Florida is available now with a clear title and receipts from the previous owner.

Chrome letters spell out the name Thunderbird across the hood, which features a peaked center scoop with a chrome inlet surround. More chrome accents the dual round headlights and front grille and bumper. The front fenders feature the name Thunderbird in cursive script. Wire wheels wrapped in Hankook Optimo whitewall tires sit under the open front and skirted rear fenders. Thunderbird is spelled out once more in the center of the rear fascia and bookended by a pair of horizontal taillights set behind Thunderbird logos.

According to the seller, the white fabric top is equipped with repaired hydraulics and doesn't have any rips or leaks, according to the seller. However, the rear quarter window on the driver's side does not roll down.

Like the body and convertible top, the bucket front and bench rear seats and ribbed door panels are white. Those contrast with the black carpeting, dashboard fascia panel, and sun visors. The cabin features a two-spoke steering wheel connected to replaced power steering, power seats and windows, AM/FM radio with cassette player, and air conditioning. An L-shaped center console accented with stainless steel trim starts at the left side of the lower dashboard, extends to the middle, then runs down between the front seats.

Instrumentation includes a gear selector window on top of the steering column, horizontal 120-mph speedometer, odometer showing 81,571 miles, high-mounted clock, and round gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage.

Power comes from a 390ci V8 which was originally factory rated for 300 horsepower and connected to a "Cruise-O-Matic" automatic transmission. According to the seller, the engine in this particular Thunderbird has replacement valve cover gaskets.

When attempting to raise/lower the rear window, does it sound as though the motor is running or is there no reaction to toggling the switch? If the motor runs it's probably a stripped gear. (readily available) If not it's likely the motor which is not that expensive which is also readily available.

Nice thunderbird. Any idea what it would take to get the rear window fully functional? Is it an electrical issue or a parts issue? What’s the condition of the dash? It looks like the glove box color is slightly different. Does everything work regarding the interior features? Thanks in advance.

Hi Stephen … yes, the AC works… There is no smoke… The engine runs great… There were no issues with the car… You can drive the car to CA but the auto hunter people recommend having it shipped, and they will help you get that done… When I purchased the car, I had it shipped from Detroit to Florida to make sure it all happened professionally … hope this helps!

@MarkKimbrough – Do you have undercarriage pics? ...

Hi Mark … The pictures posted were taken by the auto hunter photographer, so I don’t have any extras of the undercarriage or anything else… However, there is no rust or any problem… If you are serious, I could see about taking a shot or two with my iPhone … or you could schedule an inspection also, if you like, which is what I did before I purchased the car … thanks for your question.
