Vehicle Story

This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette convertible underwent a mechanical overhaul in 2016 and received a replacement CE-code big-block 427ci V8 mated to the Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission. Additional work performed at the time included an exterior refresh in Rally Red and the refinishing of a color-matched hardtop as well as a white cloth soft top. This C3 came factory-equipped with A/C, power steering, power brakes and black leather seating that was subsequently reupholstered as part of the refurbishment. This first-year C3 Corvette is now offered with receipts and with a clear Virginia title in the seller’s name.

The C3 Corvette was launched in 1968 modeled after a concept car called the Mako Shark II and in subsequent years became known as the Stingray. This example from that first year of the generation is painted Rally Red (972) and was reportedly subject to a comprehensive 2016 frame-off restoration with receipts. The seller states the body is free of cracks in the fiberglass. The has a replacement white cloth soft top is accompanied by a color-matched Rally Red hardtop, and the perimeter is accented by chrome front and rear bumpers, vented front fenders, and a trunk-mounted chrome-finished luggage rack.

A set of steel 15” rally wheels with chrome hubcaps and polished trim rings are wrapped in Cooper Cobra Radial G/T raised-white-letter tires. Handling assistance is provided by power brakes and power steering.

The interior came factory-optioned with black leather bucket seats per trim tag data, accompanied by matching door panels, center console, dash, and carpeting. A replacement AM/FM radio and associated speakers were added as part of the restoration. Although air conditioning was part of this car’s original build and equipment remains installed, the system is not currently operational per the seller.

Gauges are provided in the form of a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and instrumentation in the center stack comprised of analog clock with accompanying readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. A five-digit mechanical odometer is outfitted, but true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The factory replacement CE-code 427ci V8 bears casting number 3963512 and has reportedly been driven 350 miles since the restoration and rebuild in 2016. A new wiring harness was installed during the restoration. The engine bay is dressed with chrome valve covers and a chrome-finished Turbo Jet-branded air cleaner. According to the seller’s estimations, this powerplant is estimated to produce more than 500 horsepower. Power is directed to the rear wheels through a Muncie M21 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission and a 12-bolt positraction rear end. Seller believes that the transmission and rear-end are original to the car.

The frame has been powder-coated and the undercarriage reflects surfaces in good condition per the seller.

The sale includes receipts.
