This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL convertible is a European-spec example that was reportedly sold new in Germany and later imported to the US, prior to its acquisition by the seller in Kansas in 2016. Finished in Silver Metallic with a black soft top over a black MB-Tex interior, the car is said to have received a repaint just over 6 years ago. Power is supplied by a 2.8-liter inline-six mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Sporting a newly installed soft convertible top, this W113 is now offered with a color-matched hardtop, records from the sellers ownership tenure and a clear Kansas title in the seller's name.
Finished in Silver Metallic, a repaint is said to have been done on the car just over 6 years ago. A new convertible top was also installed in 2016 and has only been upright twice since installation per the seller. A color-matched hardtop is also included with the car. Exterior features include Euro-spec headlights, chrome bumpers, and a single side mirror.
Factory Bundt style 14” forged aluminum wheels are wrapped in Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted discs.
The interior features redone MB-Tex upholstery (116), complemented by black carpeting and a black dash pad. The factory AM/FM Becker radio is said to have been refurbished and operative and an analog clock is situated right of center on the center stack.
Behind the Nardi wood-trimmed steering wheel sits VDO instrumentation, comprised of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7K-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, oil pressure and coolant temperature. Following its importation to the US, the Euro-spec odometer was converted to miles from kilometers. Mileage currently shows 11,300, though approximately 40K miles have been added since the odometer conversion.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six is reportedly original to the car and features mechanical fuel injection. Factory ratings measured the W113 at 168 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller does note a removal of the transmission cover and inspection of the gears. A recent servicing also included the addition of ATF fluid to the power steering system.
Additional photos showing the underside are provided in the gallery below.
AUTOHUNTER ADMIN UPDATE 9/21/20 10:21AM PST: Photos of when the car was being repainted have been added to photo gallery, New photos can be found at the end of the gallery.
It is a matching numbers car. Again, as far as I can tell by paint inspection it is an original silver car. If you check out the body work photos I received from the previous owner, you will see a silver trunk lid and rear quarter before being sanded/prepped for the repaint. However, I do not have an original build sheet.
@eo@63 – Silver is the original color. The hard top is in great shape except for some staining on the head liner which could be easily dyed (we have done this to other cars in the owners collection). Some chrome is pitted and the rubber on the top is dried out in a few places but not where it seals. No mechanical issues. Everything works as it should. Please also note the dash pad was replaced after the car was painted in 2016. ...
The reason I stated that silver is the original color is because I can find no evidence of another color anywhere on the vehicle.
@FrenchGuyMiami – Is the present silver color of the car the original color? The hard top appears very little among the pictures. Do you have more pictures? It seems the hardtop chrome is pitted. Is it? Any aspect or mechanical problems to be reported? Tks in advance. ...

The only mechanical history I have is from the current owner (2016) to present. In 2016 the rear axle boot was replace along with a power steering hose. The car's locks were also re-keyed. In 2019 the power steering pump seal was replaced. This year the speedometer was repaired and the transmission was inspected and a gear tightened. The car starts and drives well plus has no leaks. It really needs to be driven more!
Headlights appear to be US-spec sealed beams. No?
I was finally able to make contact with the previous owner (as stated the car was purchased by the current owner in 2016). He forwarded the pictures, that have just been added (carousel 4) showing the paint and body work in progress. All rust was removed which included the trunk floor being replaced. The work was actually done in 2015/2016 and looks fantastic. The paint has no rock chips, no scratches or dings! And the car has only been driven about 200 miles since the work was completed.
