Vehicle Story

This 1973 Volkswagen Type 2 is a Brazilian-market pickup powered by a rebuilt 1,600cc flat-four paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Featuring a hydraulically activated tipping cargo bed, this pickup was the recipient of a respray and wears newer Pirelli tires. Finished in two-tone green and beige over a black vinyl interior, this T2 pickup is now offered with a VW-branded car cover and a clear Florida title in the seller’s name.

This pickup was initially produced for the Brazilian market and subsequently imported to the United States. The body is described as being in fair condition, having been resprayed one year ago in the current color scheme of two-tone green and beige. The finishes would need cosmetic refinishing for a show-level finish per the seller, featuring bright accents including a prominent VW logo at the front end, headlight rings, moldings, handles, and window surrounds. The bed features metal side rails and a hydraulic-powered tipping mechanism that is said to work well.

The 14” color-matched steel wheels are wrapped in newer Pirelli 185-section whitewall tires, and the suspension is reported to be in good condition although the braking system requires service.

The interior offers black vinyl upholstery with matching lap belts, door panels, and a rubber flooring material, with all materials reported to be in good condition for their age. The dash is painted in beige and equipped with a passenger-side grab handle. Ventilation is provided by fold-out windshield panels as well as side-mounted wing windows.

Instrumentation is housed within a metal surround and framed by the two-spoke steering wheel, consisting of a 120-km/h speedometer and an inoperative fuel gauge mounted to the left. The six-digit mechanical odometer reads 65k kilometers, and the cluster is believed to have rolled over twice, thus having an estimated mileage covered of 265k kilometers. True milage on the chassis is unknown.

The rebuilt 1,600cc flat-four features dual carburetors and is running well but per the seller, but will need some adjustments for optimal performance. The seller states the engine burns oil, there is a misalignment in the steering gear, and the braking is said to require service. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission and a floor-mounted shift lever.

Photos showing the underside are available in the gallery, illustrating light corrosion consistent with age.

The sale includes a VW-branded cloth car cover.
