Vehicle Story

This 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 AMG is a well-maintained convertible that has covered 54,241 miles since new and is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. This SL was originally sold in Las Vegas, Nevada, and spent most of its life in the western region before relocating to Texas in early 2021. Recent maintenance has included the replacement of the struts, battery, and cabin air filter, along with a 30,000-mile service performed at a Mercedes-Benz dealership. Equipment includes woodgrain interior trim, chrome-finished AMG 18” wheels, and a Comfort Package with heated, ventilated, and massaging seats. Finished in Aegean Blue Metallic over a gray leather interior, this R230 SL500 is now offered with a CARFAX report with a clear Texas title in the seller’s name.

The fifth-generation SL launched in 2001 as a two-door convertible with a color-matched power-retractable hardtop called the Vario Roof. This SL500 is painted Aegean Blue Metallic (946) and the body features bi-xenon headlamps, fog lamps, front fender grilles, a trunk-mounted LED third brake lamp, and dual exhaust outlets. The front valance below the bumper has been repainted, and the seller has provided photos in the gallery of specific blemishes which are few.

Split five-spoke 18” chrome-finished AMG-branded wheels are wrapped in staggered-sized Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. The suspension features auto-leveling Active Body Control, and stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors.

The interior is equipped with the Comfort Package and offers heated, ventilated, pulse/massage, and power-adjustable gray leather bucket seating, with color-coordinated door panels, carpeting, dash, and a center console. Gloss wood trim accentuates the cabin in various areas, and additional amenities include a COMAND navigation system, automatic dual-zone climate control, aluminum pedals, and a Harmon Kardon surround sound with a 6-disc CD changer.

Instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a digital exterior thermometer, and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The digital odometer reads 54,241 miles, which is an actual reading per the seller.

The 5.0-liter M113 V8 was factory rated at 302 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque, and maintenance has included an oil change in August 2020 with consistent service over the car’s lifetime. The struts were replaced in 2020, the battery was replaced in 2018, and a 30,000-mile service was performed at Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, Arizona in 2016. Other recent items addressed include a brake system check and replacement of the cabin air filter. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.

The CARFAX report shows minor damage dated July 2019 involving the front of the car, but no additional details available. The vehicle passed an Arizona emissions inspection in August 2020.

@Scottabner – Would this car make a ten hour drive? ...

I have no reason to think it wouldn't. I drove it to Shreveport LA and back.

@Memphisrat1 – does the car have keyless entry and push button start? ...

It has the "Keyless-go" option, with a button on the shift handle to start/stop the engine. I've never tried to use this, I just push the button on the key to unlock. Soooo, I went to the manual see what I'm missing, and apparently the key has a transmitter built into it. The manual states that the key should never be carried in a pocket with a cellphone or coins (?!?), as this will ruin the transmitter. I tried following the manual instructions (p. 102), and I couldn't activate it. I assume a new key would be required. I'm not sure if anyone (in 15 years) carries their keys in a separate pocket away from the phone or coins...........

Hey Will, I thought they all had this, maybe not. You control it with the console top switch. The windscreen attaches to it. I like the look of it with the top down.

@wthorp – please explain the "how, when, why" of what I think is a factory ROLL BAR...........my 2003 SL 500 does NOT have anything like this...........thank you , WILL THORP ...

Hey Will, not sure why yours doesn't have it, I kinda thought they all did, maybe not. The windscreen attaches to it, but I never saw the need for that, since I only had it on the freeway a few times. The control is part of the console top switch on this one. I like the look of it when the top's down.
