Vehicle Story

This 1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula is a largely original F-body sports coupe powered by a 301ci V8 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. The seller has owned the vehicle for 10 years and describes it as retaining original finishes both inside and out, having been preserved and garage-kept. Finished in two-tone silver and dark gray over a black cloth interior, this second-generation Firebird is now offered with a build sheet and a clear Massachusetts title in the seller’s name.

The second-generation Firebird first launched in 1970 and rode on General Motors’ F-body platform. A front-end restyle subsequently came in 1979 and body configurations were offered in both coupe and T-top form. This example is an unmodified coupe that is described as wearing its original silver paint with black lower panels, Formula decals, and a red accent stripe around the perimeter. There are paint blemishes on the upper panels and corrosion present at the lower edges of the quarter panels, as shown in the photo carousel. Exterior equipment includes dual hood intake vents, slim color-keyed sideview mirrors, mud flaps, an integrated three-piece rear spoiler, and a ribbed full-width taillight panel.

Five-spoke 15” Rally II wheels with Pontiac-logo center caps are wrapped in Super Sport Futura GLS raised-white-letter tires. Pontiac advertised this car as having a Radial Tuned Suspension (RTS) which included sway bars and other handling upgrades.

The interior is upholstered with black cloth high-back bucket seats and matching materials for the center console, vinyl door panels, dash, and carpeting. The passenger side of the dash has a grab handle, and there is engine-turned aluminum trim encompassing the driver field of vision. A push-button radio and ash tray are installed in the center stack, and the tilt-adjustable steering wheel is a three-spoke leather-wrapped unit with the Firebird center logo. The seller states that the clock does not work but an accessory clock is mounted in the tachometer cluster. The trunk is carpeted and contains a spare tire.

Instrumentation is housed within a brushed aluminum bezel and contains a 100-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and accompanying gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 65k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The numbers-matching 301ci V8 features a four-barrel carburetor and received an oil change and a replacement water pump in 2020. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a 3-speed automatic transmission and a console-mounted shift lever.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

The sale includes a copy of the build sheet.

Lots of rust on this one. Corrosion on the lower panel? You mean rust rot! It looks like you could punch a hole through it easily. Hopefully everything else is solid. Having the original paint is good, but one would be better off fixing all of the rust issues and repainting the car.
