Vehicle Story

This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is finished in Matador Red with a black vinyl top over a black interior and is powered by a numbers-matching L78 396ci V8 paired with an M21 4-speed manual transmission.  This Chevelle is listed in the L78 Registry and is 1 of 4,751 produced in 1968.  Equipment includes a 12-bolt positraction rear end, factory tachometer, and dog dish hubcaps.  Located in Boca Raton, Florida, this Chevelle is now offered on a clean Florida title by the selling dealer.

The car is finished in its factory shade of Matador Red and has been fully and professionally restored.  The body lines and paintwork exhibit a show-quality appearance, and the vinyl top was replaced as part of the restoration process.  All chrome and trim are in good condition, including the headlight bezels, bumpers, window trim, and side moldings.  SuperSport emblems are fitted in both the front grille and the black taillight panel.

Factory 14” steel wheels are finished in Matador Red, matching the body, and are equipped with chrome dog dish hubcaps; all mounted to Firestone F70 tires on all four corners. Braking is handled by manual drums all around.

The Chevelle was factory equipped with Buick interior components due to a production strike in 1968 and consisted of black vinyl bench seats for both front and rear with matching door panels and carpet.  The factory push-button AM radio is fitted in the dash, just below controls for the heater. A chrome shifter with a chrome knob for the 4-speed is mounted on the transmission tunnel, and an "SS 396" script is found on the passenger side dash.  The car has a full-size spare tire and the factory jack equipment in the trunk.

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer along with a factory roller tachometer and an analog clock.  Additional gauges provide readouts for voltage, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level.  The five-digit odometer reads 64k miles which are original to the vehicle per the seller.

The matching-numbers 396ci V8 has been rebuilt and was factory rated at 375 horsepower.  It retains many of its original parts, such as the Winters aluminum intake manifold and factory exhaust manifolds, while original factory style hardware was used during the reassembly. The engine bay was fully restored to the original condition, with the inner fenders and firewall finished in matte black. The engine block and heads are finished in the correct Chevrolet engine orange.  The fuel lines and brake lines have been replaced recently.  Power is sent to the rear wheels through the matching-numbers 4-speed Muncie M21 manual transmission and factory KK code 12-bolt 4.10 positraction rear end.

The underside has been fully restored, with all components repainted or replated. Additional photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.
