Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 4x4 received a two-year restoration and shows 82,675 original miles. It comes with a steel color-matched factory hardtop, newer lighting, BFGoodrich tires, a Pioneer audio system, and a lifted suspension with Rancho shock absorbers. Power comes from a rebuilt 1976 3.9-liter inline-six paired with a rebuilt three-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Finished in Dune Beige over a refurbished two-tone gray vinyl and cloth interior, this FJ40 is now offered by the selling dealer with a black soft top with canvas doors and zippered plastic windows, the soft top's installation hardware, and a clear California title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The restoration process completed in the early 2000s involved the original sheet metal being sanded down to bare metal and a full recoat in the reportedly factory-correct Dune Beige (416) paint finish. According to the selling dealer, the panels and lines are straight. Exterior features include a removable tow bar, refurbished exterior hardware, re-wired lights with new lenses, a driver-side mirror, and a swing-away spare tire at the rear. The currently installed two-tone hardtop does not come equipped with rubber door seals. The selling dealer notes two small spots of surface rust below the driver’s door and at the bottom of the tailgate, as shown in the gallery to the right. Additionally, the brake lamps and turn signals work, but the taillights are inoperative and the reverse lights do not come on because the wiring for them is not connected to the transmission.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

White steel wheels with bright center caps and locking front hubs are wrapped in 30" x 9.5" BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A raised-white-letter tires. A matching spare tire is mounted at the rear of the vehicle.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The refurbished interior is fitted with re-padded and re-upholstered two-tone gray vinyl and cloth bucket seats up front, inward-facing fold-down jump seats in the rear, and newer black carpeting. Amenities include lap belts, a 200-watt Pioneer AM/FM stereo with a removable face plate and two-way speakers, front and rear heaters, a replacement dash pad, and a padded roll cage. The seller notes that the heater motor works, but the element does not.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

The instrumentation has been overhauled and includes a 100-mph speedometer along with supporting gauges for the oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 82,675 miles, which the seller states is a true reading. The lights for the gauges are currently non-operational.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The replacement Type F 3.9-liter inline-six was sourced from a 1976 model-year vehicle as shown by its date stamping and was rated at 125 horsepower, according to the selling dealer. It was rebuilt during this FJ40's restoration process and it comes equipped with a rebuilt Rochester 2G two-jet carburetor, a dry-type air cleaner, new wiring, new hoses, headers, and dual EverStart batteries with a Perko control switch. Power is fed to all four wheels via the reportedly original, rebuilt floor-shifted three-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. The seller notes a minor leak at the front of the oil pan.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The suspension has been lifted and uses solid axles, a six-leaf suspension, and a set of Rancho RS5000 shock absorbers. A replacement fuel tank was installed in 2021. The muffler has also been replaced.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The California title shows this as a 1972 model-year vehicle. The sale includes a black soft top with canvas doors and zippered plastic windows, and the soft top's installation hardware.

@broncoorscout – With the mention of what doesn't work, there's no mention of how it runs on a daily basis? ...

Not to be facetious, but it drives like a lifted early 70s four-while drive vehicle. Not a smooth ride, not a daily drive, but fun to cruise around in on the weekends. No power assist anything, so it takes a bit of muscle to crank the wheel. Brakes work great. Easily keeps up with freeway traffic. I will get a start-up and a driving video posted shortly.
