Vehicle Story

This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is powered by a numbers-matching LS5 454ci Chevrolet big-block V8 backed by a Muncie M22 4-speed and is accompanied by documentation in the form of its original build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, and warranty paperwork, among more. Originally produced in Van Nuys, California, and shipped to Guaranty Chevrolet in Santa Ana, the car was sold August 5 of its model year to its first owner. A subsequent motor rebuild brought about a list of performance enhancements including the installation of COMP Cam roller rockers, replacement Fel-Pro gaskets, street-port heads, and more as detailed below. Finished in Sunflower Yellow over a black vinyl interior, this 1971 Chevelle SS is offered from Lenexa, Kansas.

The second-generation midsized Chevelle debuted in 1968 received a cosmetic refresh in 1971 that brought in singular headlights, a revised grille, and dual round taillights. This example was reportedly subject to a frame-off restoration with a respray in Sunflower Yellow (52) and contrasting dual black stripes for the cowl-induction hood and trunk lid. Brightwork is said to be in excellent condition including the bumpers, grille, and badging. SS badges are affixed to the fenders, grille, and rear bumper, and there are dual polished exhaust outlets below the rear bumper.

Five-spoke 15” steel wheels with bowtie center caps are mounted to replacement Goodyear Polyglas GT raised-white-letter tires. Handling is assisted by power steering, power disc brakes, and a performance-tuned suspension per the accompanying build sheet.

The cabin is black in color, with seating provided by reupholstered black vinyl buckets that are split by a center console with metal trim accents. Features include SS branding on the steering wheel and door panels, a push-button radio, and tinted windows. The trunk is lined with a vinyl mat and contains the spare tire and associated equipment.

Instrumentation is comprised of a 120-mph speedometer and a 7,000-rpm tachometer, along with an analog clock as well as gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage. An additional aftermarket gauge is located at the top of the center console. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 84k miles, but total chassis mileage is unknown.

A fully-detailed matte black engine bay is home to the numbers-matching big-block LS5 454ci V8 which develops an estimated output of 450 horsepower after being rebuilt. The build carries a number of modifications which are spelled out in a photo in the carousel. Among those features are a balanced GM oil pan, resized rods, street port heads, Manley 2.19/188 valves, and more. Power is sent to the 3.31:1 rear end through a Muncie M-22 rock crusher 4-speed manual.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

The sale includes three build sheets and a Protect-O-Plate. Decoding the trim tag yields the following:

  • ST: 71-13637 — 1971 eight-cylinder Malibu two-door sport coupe
  • TP: 705 – Black coated fabric, bench seat
  • 02A — Production: First week of February
  • L 08796 – Los Angeles final assembly
  • 52 — Sunflower Yellow exterior

@HeavyChevy – thats true, which is why you cant tell based on the VIN of it being an SS. 1971 it was just an option package as opposed to the stand alone model. Check the build sheet, its RPO Z15, its a Chevelle SS ...

Thank you very much. It is a true SS!!!
