Vehicle Story

This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL convertible has driven 62,071 miles since new and is powered by a 5.6-liter V8 coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission. This SL resided long-term in the southeast until being relocated to Texas in early 2020, and it comes with a retractable soft top as well as a color-matched hardtop. The interior was completely refurbished with replacement upholstery, door panels, woodgrain trim, and a shift knob. Finished in navy blue over a new gray leather interior, this R107 560SL is now offered with a clean CARFAX report, service documentation, a hardtop stand, the original Becker radio, a car cover, and a clear Texas title in the seller’s name.

Dating back to model year 1971, the R107-chassis Mercedes-Benz SL has a two-door convertible body design with a removable hardtop as well as a cloth retractable top. This example from 1989 is painted navy blue with a faint gray pinstripe and features a color-matched cloth top with plastic rear windows, in addition to the color-matched hardtop. The exterior is noted to be in good condition, featuring fog lamps, bright bumpers with guards, a single exhaust outlet, and a trunk-mounted third brake lamp. The seller notes that there are two small tears in the lining of the hardtop.

Silver-painted 15” Gullideckel alloy wheels are wrapped in 205/65-sized Michelin tires. Handling is provided by an independent suspension, and braking is provided by four-wheel anti-lock discs.

The interior is fitted with reupholstered gray leather bucket seats and armrests, corresponding to matching MB-Tex material for the door panels and boot lid. The gray carpeting and black floor mats were replaced in both the cabin and the trunk, and the burlwood trim for the console and shift knob are new as well. Equipment includes power windows, power door locks, cruise control, automatic climate control, and a newer Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo. The original Becker radio is included with the sale.

Instrumentation is provided by a 170-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and instantaneous fuel economy. The six-digit mechanical odometer reads 62,071 miles, which the seller asserts is a true reading.

The M117 5.5-liter V8 was factory rated at 227 horsepower and 287 lb-ft of torque, and recent maintenance included an oil change in 2020. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission and a console-mounted shift lever.

Additional undercarriage photos can be found in the gallery.

The CARFAX report is free of mention of any accidents or damage. The sale includes documentation, a car cover, the hardtop stand, MB first aid kit, and the original Becker Grand Prix radio.

ADMIN UPDATE: A photo has been added to show the locking mechanism for the convertible top.

Just a reminder to view the following pictures. #53- New leather seats, headrests , armrests and back panel skins. New gray tex door skins, door pockets and boot lid cover. Car still has that fresh leather smell when you get in. #65- New wood dash kit including shift knob. The strip above the glove compartment is original. #69 and #79- New floor and trunk carpet. #97- Summary of mechanical and restoration items. The previous owner has documentation ( inc with this sale) that he spent just over $20K on this vehicle. A new, full length car cover is included in this sale. I used it even though car was always kept in my garage. Thank you for watching and bidding on this vehicle.

Forgot to mention small ding on side of hard top. Very similar in size to one in video

I know people bidding on this vehicle want honesty and a true representation of the vehicle at the time so I am including the following information. The car has been driven 12 miles (62087) since the original posting. 1) Please review pic 92. There is a small dent in the chrome strip next to each of the roof locking mechanisms. These are cosmetic and do not impair the function of the roof locks. 2) Please review the VIDEO tape at the 23 second mark to see a small , shallow ding right above the faint gray pin stripe. I would guess it is about the size of a dime and was very hard to see in the submitted pics 3) There was a question in the 2018 Paint History documentation on whether the car had been repainted. The owner at that time wanted everything fixed and/or restored on the car and the Atlanta Austrian Motors mechanic , who admitted he was no paint expert, made a side note "the car has been painted". The owner then contacted the prior owner ( preceding 20 years) who he bought the car from and was told the car was buffed and polished to remove the oxidation from storage. There was no mention of the car being repainted. The owner then took it by Bud's Benz-Classic MB Restoration in Atlanta. They all agreed the paint was in good shape , is at least 25 years old,and the color is consistent with MB paint 904 . They also agreed it is "one stage" paint which was with the original paint used by MB in 1989. It was their opinion the paint looked original. I have taken the car by my MB repair facility and it was the owners opinion the paint was original. I then took it by the paint and body shop he uses. Upon inspecting the entire vehicle ,including the hood, wheel wells, trunk, joints rubber molding etc, it was his opinion as well that the car had not been repainted. The car has a clean CARFAX report which further supports the paint history of the vehicle. Items 1-3 were present before I bought the car. 4) I had the valve cover gaskets replaced in March. There appears to be a very small and I mean small oil drip. I tried to verify today by driving the car but no oil fell on the paper after parking the car.

I did it to upgrade and refresh the interior of the vehicle. There wasnt any issue or event that necessitated this action.

The description indicates the interior was replaced. Was there an event that necessitated this or was it just to return the vehicle to its current condition?

@Adenzeno – How does the top operate? AC blow cold? Videos possible? Thank you ...

The ac blows cold out of all the vents. Will try and submit video tomorrow. The hard top is placed over the vehicle ( best done with 2 people as top is heavy ) The vehicle hard top has 5 latching points. There are 2 in the windshield header bar, 1 behind each door and 1 center locking pin on the hardtop. Rotate 2 levers behind the drivers side.to lock everything in place. Hook up the plug ans socket to the heated rear window. The procedure is easily explained in the enclosed operations manual.
