Vehicle Story

This garage-kept 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle two-door convertible is a custom Pro-Touring performance build powered by a big-block 454ci V8 paired with a rebuilt Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a performance camshaft, 20-inch aluminum wheels on Nitto tires, and a full set of Auto Meter gauges. Finished in black with a functioning automatic black retractable top and white accent striping over a black vinyl interior, this second-generation Chevelle is now offered with a clear Virginia title in the seller’s name.

The Chevelle model joined the Chevrolet lineup beginning in 1964 as a midsize car on the A-body platform. A second generation debuted four years later and received a completely redesigned body. The 1970 update brought single-unit headlights, modified marker lights, and a new grille. This Chevelle comes from the final year of the second generation in 1972, wearing a repaint in black with white accent striping. The automatic retractable top is upholstered in black cloth. Brightwork highlights the bumpers, hood pins, window trim, SS badging, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller notes that the paint finish displays some small blemishes and that there are two tears on the convertible top.

Aluminum 20-inch Ridler five-spoke wheels are wrapped in Nitto tires. Braking is provided by discs up front and drums in the rear.

The interior has reupholstered black vinyl bucket seats and a matching center console, door panels, dash, carpeting, and floor mats. Amenities include a heater, a push-button radio, and an aftermarket Sony FM/AM/CD player installed in the glove box.

Instrumentation is provided by a suite of Auto Meter Phantom gauges including a 160-mph speedometer, a 10K-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage. The 5-digit mechanical odometer reads 27K miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The big-block 454ci V8 has been upgraded with a performance cam and an Edelbrock air cleaner. The powertrain is said to run well per the seller, having been maintained at a specialty muscle car shop in recent years. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a rebuilt Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission connected to a 12-bolt rear end with 3.73 gearing.
