Vehicle Story

This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mark III two-door is a British-built roadster that received a ground-up restoration and draws power from an overhauled 2.9-liter C-Series inline-6 paired with a rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This Mark III rides on 15” wire wheels and benefits from newer upholstery, rebuilt carburetors, a new exhaust system, and replacement brakes. Finished in two-tone Blue Metallic and Ivory over a black vinyl interior, this BJ8 is now offered with restoration photographs and a clear Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.

Assembled in Abingdon, England, the 3000 went into production beginning in 1959 as a two-door roadster. Bodywork came from Jensen Motors and manufacturing took place under the direction of British Motor Corporation Limited. In 1964, the BJ8 variant was unveiled with changes to the drivetrain and standard equipment. This 3000 from the final year of the model in 1967 was repainted in two-tone Blue Metallic and Ivory as part of a ground-up restoration. The doors and trunk lid received repairs, and the exterior’s body lines are said to be precise and straight. The seller notes that the retractable top mechanism is complete but the canvas is in need of replacement, and there is a dent on the rear fender.

Powder coated 15” wire wheels with two-eared knock-off spinner caps are wrapped in Vredestein Sprint Classic tires with remaining tread. The frame was acid-dipped as part of the refurbishment. The brake pads were replaced and the calipers have been rebuilt.

The interior is fitted with replacement black vinyl upholstery, matched to the door panels, center console, and dash. Features include a dash-mounted rearview mirror and a heater. The trunk is carpeted and contains the battery.

Smiths-branded instrumentation is aligned within a woodgrain veneer bezel and includes a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 74k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown. The seller notes that the tachometer does not work.

The 2.9-liter C-Series inline-6 was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. This BJ8 underwent an engine rebuild during which the motor was overhauled and bored to .030 over, and other recent maintenance includes rebuilt carburetors and a new exhaust system. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a console-shifted rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

The sale includes restoration photographs, and the seller has provided videos with additional details.
