1962 Ford Thunderbird M-Code

This 1962 Ford Thunderbird 2Dr Hard Top is a rare survivor with all original equipment and only one owner as reported by the seller, powered by an M-code version of the 390ci 6.4L V8. The M-code option featured 3 two-barrel Holley carburetors producing 340hp. Only 145 M-code Thunderbirds were built in 1962, 120 were the convertible sports roadster model and 25 being the 2-door hardtop version like this Thunderbird, making this a very rare survivor. Features include a Swing Away steering wheel, leather interior, dual exhaust, power windows, door locks, and driver’s seat, factory air conditioning, and 48-spoke Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels. Many new parts have recently been installed including tires, brakes, fuel pump, fuel lines, brake booster, spark plugs, and wires. This Rangoon Red 1962 Thunderbird 2 door hard top is still wearing all its factory chrome and stainless trim, emblems, and handles. Original headlights, grill and bumper can be seen at the front. While the factory bumper with integrated taillights and fuel door are mounted at the rear.

A set of chrome 48 spoke Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels with tri-bar center caps are wrapped with Hankook Kinergy ST 215/75/14 whitewall tires.

The interior is furnished with original white leather front bucket seats with factory seat belts and a matching rear seat with tan carpeting covering the floorboards.

The padded dashboard is white on the bottom and contrasting gold on the top, split by ribbed trim that flows down into the center console housing a 120 MPH speedometer, a clock, and a fuel/temperature gauge. This Thunderbird features the highly touted Swing Away steering wheel. With the transmission in park, the steering wheel and column will slide 18” to the right allowing the driver to exit the cabin easily. The steering column is topped with a 3-spoke white steering wheel with chrome horn ring.

The engine is an M-code version of the 390ci 6.4L V8. The M-code option featured 3, two-barrel Holley carburetors producing 340hp. Factory chrome Thunderbird embossed stamped steel valve covers, aluminum finned oval open element air cleaner, new spark plugs and wires complete the engine. Factory power brakes, air conditioning, power steering, and factory radiator cooled by a mechanical fan, can be found under the hood.

According to the seller, this Thunderbird was purchased by the late Aurelbelle Shaffer, who was the wife of deceased Raymond Shaffer, retired President of Greyhound Bus Line. Aurelbelle drove this Thunderbird as her second car and always kept it parked under a carport in Scottsdale, AZ. In 1992, the car was placed in a storage facility in AZ and kept there until moved to GA in 2010. The car remains in a building and has only been driven on and off a car hauling transport vehicle since being placed in storage. Being kept under cover has really helped to preserve the interior and exterior of the car. Some receipts for parts and service work will be included in the sale.
