This 1972 MG MGB GT is a 3-door hatchback powered by a 4.2-liter Rover V8 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. The car was manufactured in May 1972 at Austin-Morris LTD in England, and it features factory air conditioning, cruise control, and a center console. A custom refurbishment has included the installation of a Holley carburetor, an aluminum radiator with electric fan, a performance camshaft, up-rated water pump, a new Centerforce clutch, a brand new Ford 8" 3.0 positraction rear differential mated to heavy-duty drive shaft, custom suspension, halogen lighting, battery cut off switch and emergency ignition cut off, MSD electronic ignition, 4-caliper front brakes with slotted and drilled discs, original aftermarket alloy Cosmic wheels with Yokohama tires, custom-machined octagon hub caps, and more. Finished in black over a tan leather interior, this MGB is now offered with a clear Maryland title in the seller’s name.
The body of this fixed-roof hatchback was professionally resprayed in black as part of a cosmetic restoration. The front and rear bumpers are chrome with black guards, along with side moldings, trim, and handles. Lighting is provided by HS4 halogen lights and driving lights, and a custom stainless-steel exhaust system is installed with dual polished tips at the left rear.
Aftermarket alloy 14” Cosmic wheels with custom center-,machined octagon hubcaps are wrapped in 205/60 Yokohama 205/60 tires. The front disc brakes have slotted and cross-drilled rotors, and the brake lines are braided stainless-steel.
The interior is fitted with tan leather bucket seats, matching door panels and carpet, a black dash, and black seat belts. Amenities include a wood shift knob, air conditioning, cruise control, and an AM/FM stereo sound system. The seller indicates that the car is equipped with an ignition cut-off switch and a new condenser and dryer for the air conditioning.
Instrumentation is framed by a 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel consists of a 120-mph speedometer, a Stack Classic tachometer with a shift light, and factory gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. An auxiliary oil pressure gauge and voltmeter have been added under the hood. The 5-digit odometer shows approximately 83k miles, which the seller asserts is accurate.
The aluminum 4.2-liter Rover V8 has been upgraded with larger valves, a custom-ground camshaft, a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, a ported and polished intake, a Mallory dual-point distributor, and an upgraded oil pump with a remote filter and oil cooler. Other features include an MSD electronic ignition and coil with dash-mounted timing control adjustment, an aluminum radiator, overflow tank, and ultra-thin electronically-controlled fan, an up-rated water pump, and a new Centerforce clutch with an upgraded flywheel. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission with a Ford 8” 3.0 positraction mated to a heavy-duty driveshaft.
Substantial work has been done to the suspension, including a rebuild of the hardware up front, new bushings, new KYB struts, an anti-sway bar up front, and a panhard bar in the rear. Additional photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.
The sale includes service records and photos of the build/restoration process.
AUTOHUNTER ADMIN UPDATE 8/1/21 9:40AM: The description has been changed to reflect that the car has leather interior, not vinyl as previously stated.
